History:

Founded in 1879, Kostanai is located near the Russian boarder in what today is Kazakhstan. The original name of the settlement was Nikolayevsk. In 1895, it was renamed to Kustanai. Its original settlers were mostly farmers and the region is still heavily involved in agricultural production. On 17 June 1997, the name was changed to Kostanai.

Volga German families who had been deported to Siberia and Kazakhstan in 1941 began relocating to Kostanai in the 1950s following implementation of Soviet agricultural incentives for development of the region. As of 2018, approximately 2.3% of the population of Kostanai remains ethnically German.
