Klaus Berns, a farmer, his wife, and his stepchildren arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the Danish galliot Engel Rafail under the command of Skipper Konstadt.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Tarlyk on 13 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 23.
The 1767 census records that Nikolaus Berns came from the German village of Lonez in the Holstein region.
