Johann Christian Brautigam, a milliner (Hutmacher), and his wife Susanna Maurer settled in the Volga German colony of Katharinestadt on 3 August 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 137.

In 1778, Christian Brautigam and his family moved from Katharinenstadt to Moscow.

The 1767 census records that Johann Christian Brautigam came from the German village of Schmale in the region of Sachsen (Saxony). his wife Susanna Maurer is recorded as coming from the German town of Nürnberg.

There are no known surviving male descendants of this family among the Volga German colonies.
