Georg Friedrich Gross, a salt master (Salzsieder), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Kratzke.  They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 20.

In 1792, son Johann Philipp Gross moved from Kratzke to Yagodnaya Polyana.

Before 1798, Georg Friedrich's widow, Sophia, moved to the colony of Merkel. According to the 1798 census of Merkel, she was living in the neighboring colony of Dietel.

The 1767 census records that Georg Friedrich Gross came from the German region of Nassau.
