Matthias Schäfer, a farmer, settled in the Volga German colony of Louis on 14 August 1766.  He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 50 along with his new bride, widow Anna Schlosser (maiden name Kraus according to the 1798 census) and her children.

The 1767 census records that Matthias Schäfer came from the German village of Keller.
