Michael Stehle and his wife Maria Regina immigrated to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein), arriving in the city of Schleswig on 9 May 1761.

They are last recorded in the Danish colonies on 12 January 1765. They joined the migration to Russia and settled in the Volga German colony of Grimm. They are recorded there on the 1775 census in Household No. 63.

In 1788, Philipp Stehle moved from Grimm to Bauer.

The Eichhorns record that Michael Stehle came from the German region of Württemberg.

Various records use different spellings for this surname including Stehle, Stähle, Stehli, Stahly.
