Christian Stoppel, a farmer, and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Shcherbakovka on 15 June 1765. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 30.

In 1788, Georg Friedrich Stoppel moved from Shcherbakovka to Stephan.

The 1767 census records that Christian Stoppel came from the German village of Seelenberg.
