Discussion & Documentation:

Claudius Bernhardt was born in 1723 in Narich, Choren, France. Nikolaus [sic] Bernhard, a farmer, his wife Anna Christina, and children (Georg Sebastian, age 12; Eva Barbara, age 7; Anton, age 4) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 15 September 1766 aboard the galliot Johannes under the command of Skipper Stahl.

Claudy Bernhard [sic], his wife Anna Christ. Barbara, and children (Bastian, age 12; Eva Barbara, age 7; Anthon, age 4) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that wife Anna Christ. Barbara died en route.

Nikolaus [sic] Bernhard, his [new] wife Elisabeth, and children (Egoris Sebastian, age 13; Anna Barbara, age 6; Alexeus Anton, age 4) are recorded on the 1767 census of Frank in Household No. 39.

He is recorded as Claudius again on the 1798 census of Frank where his widow and children are recorded in Household No. Fk052.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Nikolaus Bernhardt came from the German region of Lothringen. The 1767 census records that he came from the French village of Nazig [?] near Gerene [?]. This is believed to be the German city of Nanzig which was located in Lothringen. Today it is called Nancy and located in France.
