Johann Ludwig, a butcher (Fleischer), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Degott on 18 July 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 1 along with a note that Johann Ludwig was serving as the colony's mayor (Vorsteher).

Johannes Ludwig and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Degott in Household No. 21.

The 1767 census records that Johann Ludwig came from the French village of Waslam.
