Wilhelm Mattern, a farmer, and his wife Philippina settled in the Volga German colony of Beauregard on 27 August 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 27 along with their 9-month-old son, Johann.

The 1767 census records that Wilhelm Mattern came from the German region of Wiesbaden.
