Andreas Stephan, a merchant (Kaufmann), and his wife Katharina Elisabeth settled in the Volga German colony of Stephan on 24 August 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 1.
It is after Andreas Stephan that the colony received its German name.
The 1767 census records that Andreas Stephan came from the German village of Rostock.
