Ludwig Wegelin, a weaver from Prussia, and his wife settled in the Volga German colony of Merkel on 28 August 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 13.

He is recorded on the 1798 census living in Kratzke where he is serving as the schoolteacher.

[Johann] Jakob Wegelin, son of Ludwig Wegelin, and his family are recorded on the 1811 census of Dietel in Household No. 6 along with a note that they had arrived in Dietel from Merkel in 1799.
